Dick Vermeil has coached at every level of football and been successful at each one of them. He coached California high school teams to championships, turned the UCLA football program into a national powerhouse and led the St. Louis Rams to a Super Bowl title. In 1959, Vermeil graduated from San Jose State, where he was the assistant quarterback. He took his first major coaching position as the NFL’s first ever special teams coach for the Los Angeles Rams in 1969. In 1974, Vermeil was named head coach at UCLA, where he had two winning seasons and a Rose Bowl victory. He went on to become head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles from 1976 to 1982. During his third season, Vermeil was named NFC Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to the playoffs for the first time in more than 15 years. Two seasons later in 1980, Vermeil led the Eagles to Super Bowl XV and was named NFL Coach of the Year. Vermeil took a 14-year break from coaching until 1996 when he took the head coaching position with the St. Louis Rams. His tenure with the Rams culminated with a Super Bowl championship in 1999. That season, the Rams held each of their opponents to 21 points of less. For the second time in his career, Vermeil received the distinction of being named the NFL’s Coach of the Year. Vermeil took over as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2000, his 10th year as a NFL head coach. He retired from coaching at the end of the 2005 season. Vermeil was the 31st coach in NFL history to record 100 career victories.
