Richard “Digger” Phelps recorded more wins as coach of Notre Dame basketball than any other coach in the school’s history. Phelps was coach for two decades beginning in the 1971-1972 season. In 20 seasons at Notre Dame, he recorded a 393-197 record (.666), including 14 20-win seasons. Phelps led the Fighting Irish to their first ever Final Four appearance in 1978. He retired from coaching in 1991. Phelps played basketball for Rider College for four years from 1959-1963. He remained with Rider College for one more year as a coaching assistant, followed by an assistant position at Pennsylvania in 1966. Phelps’s first head coaching job was at Fordham in 1970. After leading Fordam to a 26-3 record, Phelps was hired as head coach at the Notre Dame. Although Phelps is best known for his success as the Notre Dame coach, he has been involved in many other significant arenas including drug prevention and international affairs. In 1991, Phelps was voted to the President's Commission on Volunteer Services and was named Special Assistant to Governor Bob Martinez, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. During his time with the Office of National Drug Control Policy, he coordinated the “Weed and Seed” program, a Presidential initiative focusing on violent crime and neighborhood improvement. Phelps also traveled to Cambodia in 1993 to serve as a United Nations election observer. In 2007, Phelps released the book, “Undertaker’s Son,” which gives readers a glimpse of his humble background and his road to success, including his experiences with personal acquaintances George H. W. Bush, Dick Vitale and Bob Knight. Phelps also discusses his philosophy of life and his strategy for setting goals and striving to reach them. His inspirational message appeals to all readers, not just basketball enthusiasts. Today, Phelps is a popular studio analyst for ESPN’s coverage of college basketball.
