He coached in the NFL for 33 years - 26 of them as head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

After serving as an assistant coach at Virginia and Kentucky, Shula joined the NFL coaching ranks as defensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions in 1960. Three years later, he was named head coach of the Baltimore Colts and, at 33, became the youngest coach in the NFL history.

Shula spent seven years as head coach of the Baltimore Colts. In that time, he compiled a 73-26-4 record and advanced to the playoffs four times, including two appearances in the NFL Championship Game in 1964 and 1968. In 1970, Shula became head coach of the Miami Dolphins and began his run to immortality.

Shula’s appearance in six Super Bowls is more than any coach in NFL history. He is one of only two coaches to reach the Super Bowl three straight seasons (1971-73) and is one of only five coaches in NFL history to win consecutive Super Bowls in 1972-73.

Shula’s teams dominated the 1970’s, but he is best remembered for coaching the 1972 Miami Dolphins to an undefeated 17-0 season, the only NFL team in history to achieve such a feat.

Shula retired after the 1995 season with a career record of 328-156-6 (.676). Shula and George Halas remain the only NFL coaches to win 300 or more career games. Shula recorded his 300th career win on September 22, 1991, with a 16-13 victory over Green Bay in just his 29th year as an NFL head coach, a feat that took Halas 36 seasons to accomplish.

Shula's teams reached the playoffs an impressive 20 times in 33 seasons and won at least 10 games 21 times in those 33 years, suffering only two losing seasons in 1976 and 1986.

Shula was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame 1997. He has received numerous other honors, including the Horatio Alger, Bert Bell, Lombardi, and Pete Rozelle awards.

Outside of football, Shula has given time, energy and support to many charities. The Don Shula Foundation, which benefits breast cancer research, was established as a tribute to his late wife, Dorothy. Shula is also active in the American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, American Red Cross, the United Way and Catholic Charities.
Shula has authored three books - "The Winning Edge", "Everyone's a Coach" and "The Little Book of Coaching: Motivating People to be Winners".
