Previously, he was the head coach of the Iowa State Cyclones football team during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Chizik played at the University of Florida during the1981 season for head coach Charley Pell.

In December of 2008, Gene Chizik was hired on as head football coach for Auburn University, succeeding Tommy Tuberville, who left after a 5-7 season in 2008. Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs released a statement upon his hire that read: "I know that we have found the right fit for Auburn. Gene's body of work during his 23 years in this profession is remarkable. He has a strong knowledge of this athletics program, this university and the community, and he knows how to be successful in the Southeastern Conference. He is a high-energy coach that is an outstanding motivator and demands a tough, physical style of football.”

Chizik capped off the 2010-11 season with a 22-19 defeat of Oregon in the BCS National Championship that gave Auburn an undefeated 14-0 mark. Chizik was also named 2010 AP SEC Coach of the Year.

Chizik began his coaching career at Seminole High School, serving as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 1986-88. As a graduate assistant for Clemson, he coached in the 1988 Citrus Bowl and the 1989 Gator Bowl under their secondary coach.
His first full-time coaching job came as the defensive ends coach at Middle Tennessee State from 1990-1991. He and his staff led the Blue raiders to the Ohio Valley Conference championship.

Chizik moved on to linebackers coach at Stephen F. Austin from 1992-1997. After reaching the Division I-AA semifinals in 1995, he was promoted to defensive coordinator, a position he held until he left for a similar role at Central Florida starting in 1998. In his time at Central Florida, Chizik visited practice sessions of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to study the Bucs’ defensive schemes employed by then-Bucs head coach Tony Dungy, defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and linebackers coach Lovie Smith. He would employ a similar scheme at Auburn where he served as defensive coordinator from 2002-04.

During his tenure as Auburn's defensive coordinator he coached in three bowl games: the 2003 Capital One Bowl, the 2004 Music City Bowl and the 2005 Sugar Bowl. The 2004 season saw the Tigers lead the country in scoring defense at 11.3 points per game which led to Chizik’s receiving of the Broyles Award, given to the top assistant coach in the nation. That season saw Auburn finish 13-0 with an SEC and Sugar Bowl title. They finished second in the final AP and Coaches poll.

In 2005 he was hired by Texas to serve as their co-defensive coordinator, assistant head coach and linebackers coach. During his year at Texas, the team won the 2005 NCAA Division I-A national championship by defeating USC in the 2006 Rose Bowl.

Chizik’s first head coaching job came at Iowa State as he was hired on to replace Dan McCarney in November 2006. In his first season, Chizik led Iowa State to a 3-9 finish. The season included a 15-13 upset victory over Iowa, and back-to-back wins against Kansas State and Colorado. The Cyclones also experienced a notable improvement on defense, improving from 102nd to 65th nationally in Chizik’s first season in 2007.

The 2008 season saw Iowa State win their first two games, but lose their final ten finishing 2-10. The team’s defense fell off, ranking 111th out of 119 nationally in total defense. Chizik's name came up frequently as a coach who would be on the hot seat for the following season, though all acknowledged the difficulty of the job given the lack of resources and difficult schedule.

Chizik is married to Jonna Chizik, and they have three children. Chizik earned his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Florida in 1985, and went on to receive a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Clemson University in 1991.
