Master Motivator. Successful Coach. Philanthropist. These are just a few of the words used to describe Gene Stallings. Stallings began his coaching career in 1958 as an assistant under Bear Bryant at Alabama. His first head coaching job came at the age of 29 when Stallings was named the head coach at Texas A&M. He coached the Aggies for seven seasons and compiled a record of 27-45-1, including a Southwest Conference title in 1967. In 1972, Stallings moved to the NFL when he was hired by Tom Landry as an assistant coach for the Dallas Cowboys, where he remained for 14 years. In 1986, Stallings was named the head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals, where he compiled a 23-34-1 record in three seasons. Stallings returned to the college ranks in 1990 when he was hired by the University of Alabama. In his third year, Stallings coached the Crimson Tide to a National Championship after defeating Miami in the Sugar Bowl, 34-13. In six years at Alabama, Stallings compiled a 62-25 record. Retirement would hardly be the word to describe Stallings’ life after football. He has served on many boards, including President George W. Bush’s Commission on Intellectual Disability, Paris Regional Medical Center, Disability Resources, the Texas Rangers Law Enforcement Association and the Boys and Girls Club of Paris. He has also served on the Texas A&M Board of Regents since 2005. In his distinguished career, Stallings has received many awards, including SEC and National Coach of the Year. He has also received many humanitarian awards, including the Arthritis Humanitarian Award of Alabama, National Boys Club Alumni of the Year, Dallas Father of the Year and Paris Boys Club Wall of Honor. Stallings has been inducted into the Alabama and Texas Sports Hall of Fames, , Texas A&M Hall of Fame, and Gator Bowl and Cotton Bowl Hall of Fames. He also received an honorary doctorate degree from Harding University. Stallings is also the author of a book Another Season, which describes the love he has for his son who was born with Down Syndrome.
