After his senior year in college, Suh became one of the most decorated defensive players in the history of college football. His numerous awards included the AP College Football Player of the Year Award, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Chuck Bednarik Award, the Lombardi Award and the Outland Trophy. He also finished fourth in the Heisman voting.

In his career at Nebraska, Suh played all four seasons as a defensive lineman. He began as a backup his freshman year in 2006, but managed to receive freshman All-Big 12 honors from The Sporting News. Suh became a full-time starter his sophomore year, recording 34 tackles in 11 of the Cornhuskers’ 12 games.

Suh came into his own his junior year recording 76 tackles (a team high), 7½ sacks, 19 tackles for loss, two interceptions (both returned for touchdowns) and a touchdown catch while playing fullback on offense. In his banner year of 2009, his senior year, Suh was an absolute menace registering 82 tackles, 12 sacks, 23 tackles for loss, one interception and three blocked kicks. In a losing effort in the Big 12 Championship Game against Texas that year, Suh received MVP honors. His stat line included 12 tackles (seven for loss, a single-game school record) and 4½ sacks.

Suh topped off his college career by helping Nebraska’s defense conduct the first shutout in Holiday Bowl history. The shutout of Arizona was the first time a team had been held scoreless in the 32-year history of the Holiday Bowl.

After the season, Suh was a consensus First-team All-American, earned First-team All-Big 12 honors, was the AP National Player of the Year (the first defensive player to earn this award), earned Big-12 Defensive Player of the Year honors, was named the Defensive Lineman of the year and was a Heisman Trophy finalist

Entering the NFL draft, Suh was regarded as one of the best prospects available. ESPN’s draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. described Suh as "maybe the most dominating defensive tackle I've seen in 32 years." Suh was originally projected to go #1 to the St. Louis Rams, but when the Rams drafted Sam Bradford at quarterback, Suh was picked up by the Detroit Lions with the second overall pick.

Suh made an immediate impact on the field and recorded his first career sack on Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler in the first game of the season. One month later, he recorded his first career interception against the 2010 first overall pick Sam Bradford of the Rams. As a testament to his team-first attitude, Suh filled in for injured Lions kicker Jason Hanson for an extra point. His kick hit the right upright, however.

Following his first NFL season, Suh was selected as a starter for the Pro Bowl. He became the first Lions rookie since Barry Sanders to be selected as a Pro Bowl starter.

On April 17, 2010, at the annual Husker Spring Game, Suh announced a $2.6 million donation to the University of Nebraska. Two million dollars of his gift will go to Nebraska Athletics for its Strength and Conditioning Program, and remaining $600,000 will create an endowed scholarship for the UNL College of Engineering. His gift is the largest single charitable contribution by any former player, and occurred before Suh was taken with the second overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
