Patrick Roy is considered the greatest goalie in National Hockey League history. In 2004, he was named the best goaltender in NHL history by both a panel of sportswriters and a poll of hockey fans. Roy was born on October 5, 1965 in Sainte Foy, Quebec, Canada. He started his career in 1982 with the Granby Bisons of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he spent three seasons. In 1984, Roy was picked 51st overall by the Montreal Canadians in the NHL draft. Roy made an immediate impact with the Canadians in 1985-86. He was named to the All-Rookie team and led Montreal to the playoffs. It was during the 1986 playoffs that Roy’s star truly shined as he led the team to the Stanley Cup title and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP. Roy spent the next 10 seasons with Montreal and established himself as the best goaltender in the league. He played in six All-Star games and won another Stanley Cup in 1993, where he once again won the Conn Smythe Trophy. Roy was traded to the Colorado Avalanche midway through the 1995-96 season and never missed a beat. He promptly led the Avs to their first Stanley Cup and the third of his career. Roy spent seven more years in Colorado, won another Stanley Cup in 2001 and was named to five more All-Star games. Roy retired in 2003 with a long list of records, including most wins (551), most games played by a goaltender (1,029) and most playoff wins by a goaltender (151).
