Throughout his 19-year career, Rod Carew established himself as one of baseball’s best hitters. He had 3,053 hits and seven batting titles. Carew spent most of his career with the Minnesota Twins (1967-1978) before finishing with the California Angels (1979-1985).
Carew was named American League Rookie of the Year in 1967. He had a batting average of .300 or better for 15 consecutive seasons. He was also named American League Most Valuable Player in 1977 and was selected to 18 All-Star teams.
After retiring in 1986, Carew opened the Rod Carew Baseball School. He then worked as a hitting coach for the Angels and Milwaukee Brewers. Carew also spent time raising money to help fund research for pediatric cancers. He founded the annual Rod Carew Children’s Cancer Golf Classic, a cause that had special significance to him after losing his 18-year old daughter to leukemia.
Carew’s accomplishments on and off the field were recognized with the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Life Time Achievement Award and induction into the United States Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame.
Carew was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. His #29 uniform has been retired by both the Twins and the Angels.
