On July 25th, Lansing native John Smoltz will take the stage in Cooperstown, N.Y. to accept his induction into the baseball Hall of Fame, however, prior to the main event, Smoltz recently held a party in early May in Lansing to personally thank the community for serving such a key role in his growth as a pticher and major league legend. Smoltz, a Waverly High school grad, talked about the influence many people had on his life and career. Michigan State basketball coach, Tom Izzo, was at the party, as was Smoltz’s high school baseball coach. Smoltz was in the area for his son’s graduation from Michigan State.
“Lansing is so special to me,” Smoltz told the media. “This is where everything started for me. There are so many great people here. The state and town have gone through a lot and as much as I can’t get back here, this is a great weekend to see a lot of people I haven’t seen for a long time and a lot of influential and crucial people that have a point in my career where I don’t know if we take some of them away, what would it have been like.”
John Smoltz is a Hall of Fame pitcher who played two decades for the Atlanta Braves. He is predominantly known as a starter and former Cy Young Award winner. In 2002 John Smoltz became only the second pitcher in history to have had both a 20-win season and a 50-save season, the other being Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley. He is the only pitcher in Major League history to top both 200 wins and 150 saves. He became the 16th member of the 3,000 strikeout club on April 22, 2008 when he fanned Felipe Lopez of the Washington Nationals in the third inning in Atlanta. John Smoltz is a born-again Christian who has made Atlanta his home, and is Chairman of the Board at Alpharetta-based King’s Ridge Christian School, and a member of the Presbyterian Church in America.
