The Los Angeles Dodgers filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in Delaware Monday, blaming Major League Baseball for refusing to approve a multibillion-dollar TV deal that owner Frank McCourt was counting on to keep the troubled team afloat.

McCourt believes the bankruptcy will allow him the time to secure funding for his team while protecting his ownership against Major League Baseball’s advances.

Yahoo Sports reports

McCourt also announced he’d “received a commitment” for another $150 million in financing – a loan taken outside the authority of baseball – that would allow him to pay his players and employees, run the day-to-day operations of the club and acquire more players.

Creditors listed in the filing include Manny Ramirez(nearly $21 million), who last played for the team in 2010, Andruw Jones ($11 million), the Chicago White Sox ($3.5 million), Continental Airlines ($339,000), the City of Los Angeles ($240,000) and Vin Scully ($153,000)

Apparently The NY Times did not like their columnist Ben Stein doing commercial work or advertising and fired him..

The New York Times has stated that Ben Stein’s endorsement of FreeScore is a conflict of interest with his job as a Sunday business columnist for the paper. The NY Times saw this as a violation of their ethics guidelines and fired him.

The New York Times issued this statement:

“Ben Stein’s fine work for us as a columnist for Sunday Business had to end, we told him, after we learned that he had become a commercial spokesman for FreeScore, a financial services company. Ben didn’t understand when he signed on with FreeScore that this might pose a potential conflict for him as a contributing columnist for the Times, because he hadn’t written about credit scores or this company. But, we decided that being a commercial spokesman for FreeScore while writing his column wouldn’t be appropriate.

We are sorry to lose him as a columnist, and appreciate his work for the Times over the years.”

Is there more to this story than meets the eye?

Ben Stein continues to work as a television pundit for Fox News, CBS Sunday Morning and CNBC. He continues his column on Yahoo! Finance and at the American Spectator.
