The former UCLA Bruins coach announced Friday that he was diagnosed in September with prostate cancer but was told he could delay treatment until after the season. He plans to undergo treatment soon and says it will not affect his coaching.

Lavin turned around St. John’s basketball in his first season. The Red Storm went 21-12 and tied for third in the Big East. They made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2002, losing to Gonzaga in the second round.

Lavin inherited a roster with 10 seniors. After a rough start, St. John’s won eight of nine with four of the wins over ranked teams.

The legal case depicted in the movie was against Pacific Gas & Electric. The case alleged contamination of drinking water with hexavalent chromium, also known as chromium(VI), in the southern California town of Hinkley. At the center of the case was a facility called the Hinkley Compressor Station, part of a natural gas pipeline connecting to the San Francisco Bay Area and constructed in 1952. Between 1952 and 1966, PG&E used hexavalent chromium to fight corrosion in the cooling tower. The wastewater dissolved the hexavalent chromium from the cooling towers and was discharged to unlined ponds at the site. Some of the wastewater percolated into the groundwater, affecting an area near the plant approximately two miles long and nearly a mile wide.The case was settled in 1996 for $333 million, the largest settlement ever paid in a direct action lawsuit in US history.

Brooks Robinson is a popular cancer speaker at PFP Sports and Celebrity Talent Agency

In 2009 Brooks announced during a luncheon for the American Cancer Society that he had undergone successful treatment for prostate cancer.

“It was diagnosed very early and I underwent 39 radiation treatments,” Robinson said during a downtown luncheon for the American Cancer Society. “I feel healthy and fine and I’m grateful that I was vigilant about my health.”

Robinson, 71 at that time, chose that luncheon which honored patrons of the American Cancer Society’s Patient Resource Navigation Program to reveal his illness publicly for the first time.

The resource program installs “navigators” at hospitals in the Baltimore area and around the country to help cancer patients through the difficult process of digesting their diagnosis and finding the help they need to navigate treatment. The program was founded by local philanthropist Stewart Greenebaum in conjunction with the American Cancer Society.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have an incredible wife (Connie) and family to support me,” Robinson told a group of about 40 ACS supporters, “the finances to get medical care and the good fortune to be in my adopted hometown of Baltimore, which boasts the best medical care you can get anywhere in the world. When you are diagnosed with cancer, your only focus should be on getting better. If you don’t know where to go for help, you can’t get it. If you don’t know what questions to ask, you can’t get the answers.”

Aziinger has always been known as a good golfer, evidenced by his 12 wins on the PGA Tour and a PGA Championship title. Gwynn, 50, played for the San Diego Padres from 1982 to 2001, winning eight National League batting titles. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2007.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Saturday that the parotid cancer was discovered last month.

Gwynn, who is 50 years old, faces radiation and chemotherapy treatments. He says doctors have told him they feel they caught the cancer early and “there was not much of it there.”

Gwynn played for the San Diego Padres from 1982 to 2001, winning eight National League batting titles.

On January 9, 2007, Tony Gwynn was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, being selected on 532 out of 545 ballots (97.61%), seventh highest percentage in Hall of Fame voting history, and just thirteen votes short of a unanimous selection. Gwynn was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame alongside Cal Ripken, Jr. on July 29, 2007. Both were elected in their first year of eligibility.

Gwynn is San Diego State’s baseball coach and plans to return to his alma mater, which he has coached since 2003.

COOKEVILLE, TN – Bruce Jenner, motivational speaker, television reality star and former 1976 Olympian gold medalist in the decathlon, which earned him the title of the “World’s Greatest Athlete”, spoke Thursday night, August 12, at the “Celebrity Legend Dinner” held at the Leslie Town Center.

“The Celebrity Legends Dinner” is one of the highlighting events of the 8th annual Cookeville Regional Golf Classic. Jenner was guest speaker to a sold out crowd of more than 300 as he told stories about his ’76 Olympic gold medal win in the decathlon. The celebrity dinner also included an interview session conducted by Buddy Pearson, local sports authority at the Herald-Citizen.

Proceeds from the event and the tournament benefited the hospital’s Foundation, more specifically the Cancer Care Fund and Caring Hands Fund, which assist patients with various needs including utilities, groceries and medical supplies, and the Save-A-Life Mammogram Project, which provides free mammogram screenings for women who are under or insured.

“I’m a firm believer in what you’re doing,” Jenner said. “We live in the most generous country in the world. We are the greatest group of givers in the entire world. We have communities like this that reach down in their pocket to help other people. It just makes me so proud to be part of this country and the great job that we do.”

During the two day trip to St Jude, the FoxSports crew recorded commercials that will run before and after football games this season on FOX. The children were excited and thrilled, but the ex-football players said it was the children that made the biggest impression.

“They’re getting the best care, treating them properly but showing them a lot of love and these kids are fun. It was fun working with them. They’re tough too. Its amazing how resilient they are,” said Howie Long and Terry Bradshaw.

Howie Long and Terry Bradshaw were joined by Troy Aikman, Jimmy Johnson, and all the FOX Sports personalities for the visit to Memphis.

Michael Strahan was particularly touched by Shon, a standout high school football player whose college career is side tracked by Leukemia.

“To come here and meet Shon made me realize why I stopped playing football, look how big he is. To come here and meet him, see what he’s going through, to know where he is going in his future, really is inspirational to me,” said Strahan.

FOX Sports employees across the country voted to make St. Jude the charity of this football season. St. Jude says, even more exciting, the Super Bowl is on FOX this year.

“Its going to hit an audience we don’t always hit, a lot of males will be watching this so having football heroes doing commercials will hit a new audience for us,” said David McKee.

St. Jude raises more than $700 million every year. But this prime TV coverage offers more than just dollars.

“It’s all about, not just raising the money, but building awareness. Because by building awareness, god forgive when somebody has a child who has cancer, they know St. Jude exists here and fox sports will help spread that message.”

Sayers was the keynote speaker on May 4 at a Boys Town fundraising event in Omaha, Nebraska, a deal arranged for him by PFP Sports & Celebrity Talent. Sayers was asked an innocent enough question about the Bears and his response created headlines around the country. Sayers played for the Bears from 1965 – 71 and led the NFL in rushing twice, in 1966 and 1969. He was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1977.

Said Sayers: “(Jay) Cutler hasn’t done the job. (Brian) Urlacher, I don’t know how good he’s going to be coming back (from surgery). He’s 33 years old. They need a couple wide receivers, a couple defensive backs. They haven’t done a good job. If Lovie (Smith) doesn’t do it this year, I think he’s gone. He had a good team the Super Bowl year. Nothing came together for him the last couple years.”

Urlacher took exception with Sayers’ comments. “Let me ask you a question: ‘How many championships did Gale Sayers win? How many playoff games did he win when he played? None. None. None..… Does (Sayers) know how to win football games? Does he? No. How are you going to criticize someone else when you haven’t done it yourself? He’s one of our own, so that’s why it’s so frustrating.”

Responded Sayers: “If somebody asks me, ‘How do you think the Bears are going to do this year?’ If I say, ‘Oh, they are going to win 14 ballgames,’ they know the Bears can’t win 14 ballgames. Why should I lie to the people?” I couldn’t agree more. Did Sayers say anything that’s not true? My guess is that most every Bears fan would agree with his assessment.

While Urlacher is entitled to his opinions much like Sayers, it’s surprising that he has such thin skin. My advice would be not to pay attention to the criticism. Just go out and do your job. By responding, all he did was add fuel to the fire, which in turn prolongs the controversy and can ultimately serve as distraction on the field. Plus he’s never going to win public support for criticizing one of the all-time great Bears.

Among the other Bears greats who came out in support of Sayers were Hall of Famers Mike Ditka, Dan Hampton and Dick Butkus.

All eyes were on Mickelson as he embraced his wife for 27 seconds before a short kiss. A tear was seen rolling down his cheek as he was overcome with joy.

Mickelson’s wife Amy and mother Mary have both been diagnosed with breast cancer. Amy who once was one of the most visible wives on the PGA Tour, had not traveled to an event with her husband in 11 months since being diagnosed in May. The prognosis for Amy and his mother is good, however the cancer treatment has taken a toll on their energy level and on Mickerson’s as well.

“I really want to recognize my family,” Mickelson said after the win. “My wife, we have been through a lot this year and it really means a lot to share this joy together … This has been such an incredible week, an emotional week; to cap it off like this, I can’t put into words, but it’s something we’ll share the rest of our lives.”

“I’ll cherish every moment of this week,” Mickelson said. “It has been very special.”
