The kick off for the event is set to begin with a shot gun start at 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 22, Salem Golf Club, located at 2025 Golf Course Rd. S.

Statesman.com reports:

The fundraiser includes an award dinner and auction at 6 p.m., followed by a visiting session with Meadowlark Lemon at 7 p.m.

Proceeds will benefit the Salvation Army in Marion and Polk counties.

Golfers who would like to play a round of golf with the former Harlem Globetrotter can bid to do so.

Registration to participate in the charity event is required by Aug. 15. Golfers can pledge their bid on the enrollment/registration form.

In his speech, Sanders, 44, paid tribute to his coaches and teammates, but the highlight of his speech came when he reiterated a promise he made to his mother as a seven-year-old in Fort Myers, Fla.

“I made a promise when I was seven years old to this young woman at the age of 27. She was working two jobs just to see if ends could see one another, cause they never met. And she was slaving over pots and pans on that precise day,” said an emotional Sanders, in front of roughly 13,000 fans in Canton, Ohio.

“And I said, ‘Mamma’ — because I was tired of seeing her go to work and come home all tired — I said, ‘We’re gonna be rich one day. Mamma, I’m going to make a lot of money. And you will never have to work another day of your life.’ My mamma said, ‘That’s fine. But until then, you get that lawnmower and go out and cut that grass.’ …

“I made a pledge to myself, that I don’t care what it takes, I don’t care what it may take, I’m not going to do anything illegal, but my mamma will never have to work another day of her life.”

Sanders kept his promise to his mother, Constance Knight, who beamed with pride during her son’s speech.

“I’d hate to be doing nothing, I really would,” Bowden said. “The worst thing that could happen to me would be having nothing to do, it would drive me nuts. I try to speak three, four or five times a week and I really enjoy it because I usually speak to a good cause.”

When I finished college I went right into coaching at Sanford University in 1963 and I coached 57 straight years without stopping, so when I stopped I didn’t know what it would be like not to have to worry about this kid going to class or this kid going to trouble or recruiting this kid.”

During his session with media before he addressed the FCA, Bowden recalled one of the greatest recruiting coups of his career, signing North Fort Myers star Deion Sanders.

“I remember visiting with him we were very fortunate to get him because in my opinion he’s the best athlete I’ve ever coached,” Bowden said. “Just based on pure athletic ability — I might have had some that were more valuable, Charlie Ward might have been more valuable, Warrick Dunn might have been more valuable — but none of them were as good of a player as Deion.”

Bowden said he plans to continue speaking and living in Tallahassee for the time being, but he does have plans to relocate with his wife Ann to Panama City sometime in the future.

In 1972, Stallings was hired by Tom Landry as an assistant coach for the Dallas Cowboys, where he remained for 14 years. In 1986, he was named the head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals, where he compiled a 23-34-1 record in three seasons.

Stallings later returned to the college ranks in 1990 when he was hired by the University of Alabama. In his third year, Stallings coached the Crimson Tide to a National Championship after defeating Miami in the Sugar Bowl, 34-13. In six years at Alabama, Stallings compiled a 62-25 record.

John Mark died on Aug. 2, 2008 in Paris, Texas.

Two facilities at the University of Alabama have been named for John Mark Stallings, the Stallings Center that serves as home to the RISE Center for young children with disabilities and the equipment room in the University of Alabama football building.

“He certainly knows about obstacles and tough, life-changing decisions with his son battling illness,” Webb said of Gene Stallings. “From being an excellent parent to an excellent coach, he has the ability to encourage people to be strong, rely on themselves. But also to accept help when they need it.”

Judge Bruno Tonioli praised Warner’s gentlemanly nature saying, “He has proven a true sportsman. His attitude has been immaculate, incredible manners, and regardless of what happens, you have achieved a lot. You really are an American idol.”

Warner went on to thank the show, his partner, the fans, his wife and their seven children.

“I learned a long time ago that life isn’t always about winning and losing competitions, but it’s about relationships, it’s about impacting people,” he said. “And so I thank everybody at ‘Dancing With the Stars’ because it gave me an opportunity to impact people and build relationships, and that’s really what it’s all about.”

Kurt told Good Morning America that he was proud to be the last athlete standing this season.

“I was pleasantly surprised at how well we did,” Warner said of his performance with professional partner Anna Trebunskaya.

“I played football for so long that it became natural, it became something I was good at,” Warner said. “‘Dancing With the Stars’ was such a huge challenge. It was more difficult than I thought it would be.”

“Commitment to your craft, willingness to work, footwork is always a big part of athletics. … Those things lended themselves to the dances,” he said.

Warner’s professional partner, Anna Trebunskaya, who has been paired with a host of athletes on the show, including Olympic skater Evan Lysacek and another football star Jerry Rice, said she was impressed by Warner’s performing abilities.

“The problem for athletes … they’re not really performers, don’t really know how to externalize how they’re feeling,” Trebunskaya said on “GMA.” “He went out there every single week, had a blast, and made everybody enjoy it.”

The Insider asked the Super Bowl champion to reveal what he would miss most about competing on “Dancing”: “First of all, I’m going to miss [Anna Trebunskaya],” said Kurt. “You know, I mean, when you spend so much time with someone and build a relationship, you know, it’s going to be tough not seeing her every day.”

Anna offered another component that Kurt will be sad to leave behind: “You’re going to miss Monday nights,” joked Anna. “You’re going to miss going out there in the bright neon green with fringes on your pants.”

Aziinger has always been known as a good golfer, evidenced by his 12 wins on the PGA Tour and a PGA Championship title. While the Ryder Cup certainly provided a challenge to Azinger, nothing compared to the challenge he faced  when he was diagnosed 1993 with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He was at the top of his golf game when a tumor was found in his right shoulder. After six months of chemo and five weeks of radiation, Azinger went into remission and returned to golf, eventually winning the 2000 Sony Open in Hawaii. Azinger chronicled his battles with cancer in his book Zinger. Azinger is also a devout Christian.

He put together one of the top seasons by a quarterback in NFL history, throwing for 4,353 yards with 41 touchdown passes and a completion rate of 65.1%. He was named the NFL MVP of the 1999 season after leading the Rams to a victory in Super Bowl XXXIV over the Tennessee Titans.

Over the course of the next 10 years until he retired in 2009 from the Arizona Cardinals, Warner was named NFL MVP once more and to the Pro Bowl four times.
