Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation and charity work for biracial Korean children

The recent “Dancing with the Stars” winner is championing a cause very near to his heart. He has established the Hines Ward “Helping Hands Foundation” with the specific intention of improving literacy amongst inner-city youth and has also expanded to South Korea where it helps biracial children confront discrimination.

Since his first visit back to his birthplace, Seoul, South Korea, Hines has pledged $1 million of his own money to his Korea foundation and plans to raise much more through corporate sponsorship. He has been to Korea twice since winning the Super Bowl MVP award and plans to make annual trips to Korea to further his cause of ending biracial discrimination, according to The Helping Hands Foundation website

Hines spoke about his foundation to NBC News:

I decided to start my charity out of my love for kids of all ages and because of my own upbringing. In Pittsburgh, I meet kids of all ages from all walks of life. I see the desire in their eyes to be someone great and I want to do all that I can to help those without the means and/or resources to achieve their dreams.

Ward said he’s going to return to Korea in May to start the Helping Hands Foundation, building on the work he’s already done to improve the lives of mixed-race children in Korea and around the world.

“Maybe the next Tiger Woods or the next Hines Ward is sitting there in Korea,” he said, “but they never give them the opportunity to go out and excel in life and to do well because they are biracial kids.”

Phil Jackson, an 11-time NBA champion, and probably the greatest coach the sport has known, recently announced his eventual retirement just a few months ago. But ever since the Mavericks swept the Lakers in the playoffs 4-0, Jackson knew his coaching career was over.

Jackson made it a a point to say he’s happy with his decision and indicated he’s done for good.

“All my hopes and aspirations are this is the final game I’ll coach. This has been a wonderful run,” Jackson said in his final press conference.

According to the New York Post

Jackson would consider a return to coaching if “the right situation presented itself.” Naturally, everyone immediately focused on the Knicks as a potential destination for Jackson. In 2005, Jackson actually interviewed for the Knicks position by passed, taking re-taking the Lakers job he had just left instead.

Jackson has a total of 11 NBA championship rings: two as a player with the New York Knicks, six as coach of the Bulls, and three as coach of the Lakers. Nine NBA championships as a head coach ties him with Red Auerbach for the all-time lead in that category. Phil Jackson also holds the best playoff winning percentage of all-time. Bossy holds the current NHL record for most consecutive 50+ goal seasons with nine. Additionally, both he and Gretzky are the only players ever to have scored 60 or more goals in as many as five seasons. Unlike Gretzky, however, who played 20 seasons and 1,487 games, Bossy was healthy enough only for 10, of which only the first nine were full and just over half the games.

Bossy was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991. His #22 jersey was retired by the Islanders on March 3, 1992. In 1998, he was ranked number 20 on The Hockey News’ list of the 100 Greatest Hockey Players, despite having an injury-shortened career.
