COOKEVILLE, TN – Bruce Jenner, motivational speaker, television reality star and former 1976 Olympian gold medalist in the decathlon, which earned him the title of the “World’s Greatest Athlete”, spoke Thursday night, August 12, at the “Celebrity Legend Dinner” held at the Leslie Town Center.

“The Celebrity Legends Dinner” is one of the highlighting events of the 8th annual Cookeville Regional Golf Classic. Jenner was guest speaker to a sold out crowd of more than 300 as he told stories about his ’76 Olympic gold medal win in the decathlon. The celebrity dinner also included an interview session conducted by Buddy Pearson, local sports authority at the Herald-Citizen.

Proceeds from the event and the tournament benefited the hospital’s Foundation, more specifically the Cancer Care Fund and Caring Hands Fund, which assist patients with various needs including utilities, groceries and medical supplies, and the Save-A-Life Mammogram Project, which provides free mammogram screenings for women who are under or insured.

“I’m a firm believer in what you’re doing,” Jenner said. “We live in the most generous country in the world. We are the greatest group of givers in the entire world. We have communities like this that reach down in their pocket to help other people. It just makes me so proud to be part of this country and the great job that we do.”

AUGUSTA, GA – April 11, 2010, Phil Mickelson wins The Masters for a third time sharing his emotional win with wife Amy. Congratulations Phil for an outstanding game and very much deserved win. After Mickelson sank the final winning putt on the 18th hole, his wife Amy, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, was there waiting for him.

All eyes were on Mickelson as he embraced his wife for 27 seconds before a short kiss. A tear was seen rolling down his cheek as he was overcome with joy. ... Read Full Story

I often get inquiries from organizations interested in hiring celebrities who are cancer survivors. The celebrity cancer speaker talks about a variety of topics related to cancer, from their experience of how they overcame the disease to early detection to how important a positive attitude is when fighting it. And since they’re celebrities, people are more likely to listen and follow their advice.

So who are the most popular cancer speakers? There are too many to list here, but a few of the most popular include …

Robin Roberts … The Good Morning America co-host was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. Since then, she has become an advocate for breast cancer awareness and the importance of early detection. Her book From The Heart: Eight Rules To Live By, includes a chapter on her experience with breast cancer.

Bob Gibson … The baseball hall of  famer is a survivor of prostate cancer and regularly speaks across the country at prostate cancer awareness events.

Dorothy Hamill … The Olympic figure skating gold medalist was recently diagnosed in 2008 with breast cancer.

Ann Jillian … The award-winning actress was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1985 and underwent a double mastectomy. Her battle with the disease was chronicled in the top-rated 1988 made-for-TV film, The Ann Jillian Story, in which Jillian portrayed herself.

Lance Armstong … He has served as an inspiration to more cancer patients than arguably any other celebrity. The bicycling legend overcame testicular cancer that spread to his lungs and brain to win seven consecutive Tour de France titles between 1999 – 2005. He formed the Lance Armstrong Foundation to provide support to those diagnosed with cancer.

Dave Dravecky … His baseball career was cut short when a tumor was discovered in his pitching arm and ultimately led to the amputation of his arm and shoulder. Dave went onto write two books about his battle with cancer and founded Outreach of Hope Ministry. He’s also a very popular Christian speaker.

Marcia Wallace … Best known for her Emmy-award winning role of Bart’s teacher, Mrs. Krabappel, on “The Simpsons” and as Carol Kester on “The Bob Newhart Show”, Marcia was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1985. Since that time, she has become a leading breast cancer advocate and speaks of her experience around the country.

Peggy Fleming … The Olympic figure skating gold medalist was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998.

So what types of organizations are likely to hire cancer speakers? Below are a few examples …

  • Len Dawson, NFL Hall of Famer & prostate cancer survivor,  spoke at a men’s prostate cancer awareness night.
  • Ann Jillian spoke at an oncology managers conference
  • Dorothy Hamill spoke at a cancer survivor’s conference sponsored by a hospital
  • Lance Armstrong spoke about staying fit and taking care of yourself at a global conference

Gale Sayers

Gale Sayers

I recently hired Chicago Bears Hall of Famer Gale Sayers for a speaking engagement and was reminded of Brian’s Song, one of the most touching movies ever made and something that many people are reminded of when they think of Gale.

The 1971 made-for-television movie told the story of Sayers friendship with teammate Brian Piccolo, a relationship that shattered racial boundaries during a time of racial tension. Piccolo played four seasons with the Bears and, in 1969, began coughing early in the season. On November 16 in Atlanta, after scoring a fourth-quarter touchdown in a 48-31 loss to the Falcons, Piccolo removed himself from the plane, bothered by a persistent cough and chest pains.

Two days later, a chest x-ray discovered a tumor in his lungs. He underwent surgery to remove the malignant tumor on November 28, at which time the doctor discovered the cancer had spread. Piccolo began chemotherapy treatments and spent Christmas at home. In April of 1970 his left lung and left breast were removed. ... Read Full Story

Known as the original “magic” man of professional sports, Gale Sayers made football history and touched the lives of millions of Americans. As the Chicago Bears’ legendary number 40, Sayers was NFL Rookie of the Year in 1965 and scored a record six touchdowns in one game. After only three years in the NFL, he was voted the best halfback of the first 50 years of professional football. He was also the youngest player ever to be inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame. He went on to write the popular book, I Am Third, which was made into the movie Brian’s Song, depicting the relationship between Gale and Brian Piccolo, who died of cancer. The title of the book is Gale Sayers’ philosophy of life: “The Lord is first; my family and friends are second; and I am third.”

Following an incredible football career with the Chicago Bears, Sayers began another successful career in business following the same principals he used on the field. Gale Sayers is President/CEO of Sayers Computer Source, a company he and his wife Ardythe founded in 1984. The business was launched after a successful career in athletic administration and sports marketing. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and a Masters of Science degree in Education Administration from the University of Kansas. Although his technology business is his first priority, Sayers finds time to do motivational speaking engagements and appearances for many worthwhile causes.

In 1999, Sayers was inducted into the Chicago Area Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame, and was named an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year. In addition, Kansas University School of Education recently unveiled the Gale Sayers Microcomputer Center in Pearson Hall – an inspiration to generations of students and visitors of his dedication to education.

Gale Sayers also serves on the Board of Directors of Triad Hospitals, which manages healthcare facilities in the south and southwestern United States, and American Century Mutual Funds, located in Kansas City.
