Joe McElderry sings Open Arms by Journey on X Factor Semi Finals
Louis: “Joe, some people were born to sing and you were absolutely born to do this. You’re a natural performer. I loved the song choice and I think if you recorded that song in the morning you’d have a number one. You tick all the boxes, you’ve got a great recording voice, a great personality, you’re so likeable backstage – you deserve to be in the final.”
Dannii: “You’re rushing in and just making everyone love you all around the country. That song perfectly complemented the first song you sang. With those two, you’ve got to be in the final.”
Simon: “So your mentor decides on the most important night of your life to give you a song nobody knows. And you know what? It was 100% the right decision. Absolutely brilliant. You know what I admire about you – I’ve said this before – backstage, you’re really, really polite, you listen, you’ve learnt, you’ve become a better artist throughout the process, and I genuinely, genuinely wish and hope you are there next week because you deserve it.”
Cheryl: “You know what, that was the first time throughout the whole competition I felt nervous, and it’s only because I know how much it means to you to be in the final. It’s so easy for people at home to know how consistent you are and forget you need the votes, so I pray people pick up the phone and keep you in.”

Judges comments:
Louis: “Joe, that’s a really hard song you picked but you absolutely made it your own. Simon’s right, you have an amazing tone to your voice and you’d have an amazing recording voice. If you won, if you got into the final and won, you could sell millions of records. I think you have loads of talent, you’re the most consistent performer in the competition and there’s a big gap in the market for someone like you.”
Dannii: “Joe, you just clocked up another superb performance. It’s hard to believe you ever have nerves because you sing like a dream. I can hear you all over the radio and all over records. You’re going to do very, very well. You have to be in the final.”
Simon: “It’s becoming incredibly repetitive, which is very annoying, but you’re just getting better and better and better. I’ve heard a lot of versions of that song but that was one of the best versions I’ve ever heard. It was so stripped down, and the latter part where you changed the tone of your voice was absolutely on the money. It felt like it meant something to you. I’m really proud of you Joe, and of what you’re achieving.”
Cheryl: “I couldn’t be prouder. I’m speechless. That was chilling, everything it needed to be, passionate, emotional. Honestly, Joe, I think that was even better than anything you’ve done before, if that’s even possible.”

Judges comments:
Louis: “Joe, it could have been magic and it was magic. Every week you get better and better and better. You’re turning out to be a real popstar. I loved the whole production, the musical arrangement… but Joe, seriously, you deserve to be in the final three.”
Dannii: “Joe, you are absolutely flying high. You took the opportunity to do a hard song, and I know you’ve been nervous this week and worried about the notes, but you absolutely smashed it. And I can picture you in the final, I can see that.”
Simon: “Joe, look, this is going to sound a bit repetitive because it was brilliant. What was so impressive was the way you managed to maturely navigate your way through the dancers and the production. You looked like you were in control, the production wasn’t in control of you. That production, Brian Friedman, was absolutely fantastic. I’d also like to say, because they haven’t been mentioned much, the dancers are doing a brilliant job. But you, Joe, you, young man, were the star of that- brilliant.”
Cheryl: “What can I say? Listen to that reaction! Honest to God, it was flawless. I absolutely love you to pieces. I hope to God everybody at home enjoyed it as much as we did and keeps you in.”

Judges comments:
Louis: “Joe, you absolutely won round one for me and on that performance you absolutely won round two. You’ve got it all, you’ve got the voice, you’ve got the personality, you’ve got the likability. I watch you grow every week. You were born to do this and you have to sail through to the final. People have to pick up their phones and vote for you. I like everything about you.”
Dannii: “There hasn’t been a song sung in this year’s competition with more passion than that. The feeling you have conveyed through the lyrics is just exceptional. I have to see you in the final – please vote for Joe.”
Simon: “I’m absolutely gobsmacked by that, I really am. I mean, you’ve got to remember this is what I do for a living, I run a record label. And I thought, like I said in the VT, that this was a safe choice. But something happened to you in a week. You changed, almost like a boy turned into a man. What you did with that song was so simple and so beautifully sung. It really felt like you were singing sincerely every lyric. By far my favorite ever performance of yours.”
Cheryl: “Joe, you’re a little star. Honest to God, you make me proud to be a Geordie. I’m so proud of you and I pray to God everyone keeps you in. You thoroughly deserve to be in that final.”
Joe McElderry sings Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me during George Michael week on X Factor – Live Show 7. The judges all gave Joe a standing ovation. This performance could cinch Joe McElderry as the winner of X Factor 2009. It was amazing!

Judges comments:
Louis: “Definitely the best performance of the night. The theme was George Michael though. Madam broke the rules, she picked an Elton John song””
Dannii: “Four Judges standing for you. That was exceptional. When you first walked out, you were nervous and you don’t need to be, such passion and a real honestly to your voice. Love you, you deserve to be here.”
Simon: “Here’s a new rule. We’re going to stop you from speaking because after this young kid gets up on stage, does the performance of his life, absolutely 100% nailed the song and you’ve got the audacity to sit there with your silly, stupid rule book again.. who cares what you think?”
I take a bit of credit for this – I remember saying to you give it an extra 10% and you did, congratulations”
Cheryl: “George Michael sang it! And he had a massive hit with it. You just stole the show.”
