Ditka is best known for coaching the Chicago Bears for 11 years and the New Orleans Saints for three years. The Bears started 4–0 in 1989, but a series of last-second losses eventually led to a complete meltdown at the end of the season as the Bears finished 6–10. After dropping to 5–11 in the 1992 season, the Bears fired Ditka.

After leaving the Bears in 1992, Ditka took a broadcasting job with NBC, working as an analyst on NFL Live and as a color commentator for many other NBC broadcasts. From the 2000 to the 2001 season he was a studio analyst on The NFL Today on CBS Sports. He is currently a commentator on ESPN’s NFL Live, ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown, and CBS Radio-Westwood One’s Monday Night Football pregame show.

Five Points board chairwoman Sherril West said Ditka was chosen for this year’s speech for a variety of reasons.

“We want to bring in a diverse array of speakers, so we decided to go with a sports figure this time,” she said. “Mike Ditka is very popular in our area, and he’ll be speaking just before the football season starts.”

A private reception at 6 p.m. and banquet at 7 p.m. will precede Ditka’s speech at 8:30 p.m. in the Caterpillar Performing Arts Center.

Proceeds from Ditka’s appearance will benefit the Five Points building capital fund.

In the past for many football players, once their playing careers ended, they no longer had a way to stay involved with the game. Sure, some would go onto coaching or front-office positions, but the majority would have to get a “real” job and start a new career.

With the explosion of the NFL’s popularity and the continued growth of cable tv, many players are starting to pursuit broadcasting careers. There have always been broadcasting opportunities for a small number of former players such as Don Meredith and Frank Gifford, but the number of opportunities today is what makes a second career in broadcasting a viable option.

This season, games will be broadcast on NBC, CBS, FOX Sports, ESPN and NFL Network. Additionally, regional networks like Fox Sports Net, Comcast and Yes Network create opportunities that didn’t exist 10 years ago.

Who’s better to give an opinion about football than a former player? They understand the intricacies of the game better than most and can relate their experiences to the broadcast. For me, I’d rather listen to a player share his knowledge than someone who’s never played.
