Phil Jackson, an 11-time NBA champion, and probably the greatest coach the sport has known, recently announced his eventual retirement just a few months ago. But ever since the Mavericks swept the Lakers in the playoffs 4-0, Jackson knew his coaching career was over.

Jackson made it a a point to say he’s happy with his decision and indicated he’s done for good.

“All my hopes and aspirations are this is the final game I’ll coach. This has been a wonderful run,” Jackson said in his final press conference.

According to the New York Post

Jackson would consider a return to coaching if “the right situation presented itself.” Naturally, everyone immediately focused on the Knicks as a potential destination for Jackson. In 2005, Jackson actually interviewed for the Knicks position by passed, taking re-taking the Lakers job he had just left instead.

Jackson has a total of 11 NBA championship rings: two as a player with the New York Knicks, six as coach of the Bulls, and three as coach of the Lakers. Nine NBA championships as a head coach ties him with Red Auerbach for the all-time lead in that category. Phil Jackson also holds the best playoff winning percentage of all-time. During his session with media before he addressed the FCA, Bowden recalled one of the greatest recruiting coups of his career, signing North Fort Myers star Deion Sanders.

“I remember visiting with him we were very fortunate to get him because in my opinion he’s the best athlete I’ve ever coached,” Bowden said. “Just based on pure athletic ability — I might have had some that were more valuable, Charlie Ward might have been more valuable, Warrick Dunn might have been more valuable — but none of them were as good of a player as Deion.”

Bowden said he plans to continue speaking and living in Tallahassee for the time being, but he does have plans to relocate with his wife Ann to Panama City sometime in the future.

I’ve talked about being responsible for creating a great atmosphere to work in, which is then conducive to better contributions by everybody. When people enjoy being in the atmosphere that they work in, everything goes better.”

Brett Favre’s retirement announcement on March 4, 2008, opened up the Packers’ starting quarterback position to Rodgers for the 2008 season. Although Favre decided to return from retirement, he was traded to the New York Jets, meaning Rodgers would remain the starter.

With Rodgers making his debut as a starter, the Packers beat the Minnesota Vikings 24–19 at Lambeau Field. This marked the first time since 1992 that a quarterback other than Favre started a regular season game for the Packers. Rodgers ended the game with 178 yards passing and 2 touchdowns (1 passing/1 rushing).

In just his second NFL start the following week, Rodgers was voted the FedEx Air award winner after passing for 328 yards and three touchdowns in a win against the Detroit Lions. During the fourth week of the season, Rodgers streak of 157 consecutive pass attempts without an interception ended when he was intercepted by Derrick Brooks of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The streak was the third longest in franchise history behind Bart Starr (294) and Brett Favre (163). Rodgers suffered a severe shoulder sprain in the game but continued to start and played well in a win against the Seattle Seahawks two weeks later, which to many proved his toughness. Despite early successes, Rodgers had been unable to win a close game during the season despite seven opportunities to do so. On October 31, 2008, Rodgers signed a six year, $65 million contract extension through the 2014 season.

In 2010 with a 10-6 record, the Packers entered the NFL playoffs as the #6 seed Wild Card. During the playoffs, Rodgers led the Packers past the top three seeds in the NFC on the road in consecutive weeks. In the Wild Card round, they defeated the #3 seeded Philadelphia Eagles 21-16. In the divisional round, Rodgers completed 31 of 36 pass attempts for 366 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 48-21 victory over the #1 seeded Atlanta Falcons. On January 23, 2011, Rodgers struggled with a 55.4 passer rating as the Packers beat the #2 seed Chicago Bears 21-14 win to capture the NFC Championship. The Packers earned a trip to Super Bowl XLV, which they won, 31-25 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Rodgers completed 24 of 39 pass attempts for 304 yards and 3 touchdowns in the win and was named Super Bowl XLV MVP for his performance.

Aikman was the number one overall draft pick in 1989 where he played 12 consecutive seasons as quarterback with the Dallas Cowboys. During his NFL career he was a 6x Pro Bowl selection, led the team to 3 Super Bowl victories, and was the Super Bowl XXVII MVP. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.

Troy is the winningest starting quarterback in NFL history. Unfortunately, during his final two seasons, injuries began to take a toll on Aikman and the team’s winning streak. Finally, after the 2000 season, Aikman announced his retirement from football. His career statistics include 32,942 yards and 165 touchdowns for a passer rating of 81.6.

Troy has recently been in the news due to the anticipation of Super Bowl XLV between The Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers. Troy,  along with Joe Buck,  will be the color analyst for FOX News when Super Bowl XLV airs on Sunday, February 6th at 6:30 p.m. (ET).

Aikman told WFAA he likes the match up of the two teams, especially at quarterback.

“They both have great play making ability,” Aikman says. “I think it’s going to be a great game. I can’t remember a Super Bowl where you had no clear cut favorite going in. I just think it’s going to be a heck of a ball game for us.”

Aikman and a host of other former Cowboys players have been involved for months to help the Super Bowl host committee get things ready for Super Bowl XLV.

“This will be a great week,” Aikman says. “There will be a lot of stuff going on and I think we’ve got two great teams. We couldn’t have asked for a better match up.”

As for all the planning, he’s glad the final week before the Super Bowl has arrived. “It’s been good but there has been a lot of time that has been put into planning and preparation in four plus years and I think the people that come will see that,” Aikman says. “I don’t’ think anything was overlooked, so from that standpoint, I think we’re in pretty good shape.
