In 1972, Stallings was hired by Tom Landry as an assistant coach for the Dallas Cowboys, where he remained for 14 years. In 1986, he was named the head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals, where he compiled a 23-34-1 record in three seasons.

Stallings later returned to the college ranks in 1990 when he was hired by the University of Alabama. In his third year, Stallings coached the Crimson Tide to a National Championship after defeating Miami in the Sugar Bowl, 34-13. In six years at Alabama, Stallings compiled a 62-25 record.

Stallings co-wrote the book “Another Season: A Coach’s Story of Raising an Exceptional Son,” with AP journalist Sally Cook, about his love for his son who was a dedicated, longtime fan of the Crimson Tide and his dad.

John Mark died on Aug. 2, 2008 in Paris, Texas.

Two facilities at the University of Alabama have been named for John Mark Stallings, the Stallings Center that serves as home to the RISE Center for young children with disabilities and the equipment room in the University of Alabama football building.

“He certainly knows about obstacles and tough, life-changing decisions with his son battling illness,” Webb said of Gene Stallings. “From being an excellent parent to an excellent coach, he has the ability to encourage people to be strong, rely on themselves. But also to accept help when they need it.”

Brooks Robinson is a popular cancer speaker at PFP Sports and Celebrity Talent Agency

In 2009 Brooks announced during a luncheon for the American Cancer Society that he had undergone successful treatment for prostate cancer.

“It was diagnosed very early and I underwent 39 radiation treatments,” Robinson said during a downtown luncheon for the American Cancer Society. “I feel healthy and fine and I’m grateful that I was vigilant about my health.”

Robinson, 71 at that time, chose that luncheon which honored patrons of the American Cancer Society’s Patient Resource Navigation Program to reveal his illness publicly for the first time.

The resource program installs “navigators” at hospitals in the Baltimore area and around the country to help cancer patients through the difficult process of digesting their diagnosis and finding the help they need to navigate treatment. The program was founded by local philanthropist Stewart Greenebaum in conjunction with the American Cancer Society.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have an incredible wife (Connie) and family to support me,” Robinson told a group of about 40 ACS supporters, “the finances to get medical care and the good fortune to be in my adopted hometown of Baltimore, which boasts the best medical care you can get anywhere in the world. When you are diagnosed with cancer, your only focus should be on getting better. If you don’t know where to go for help, you can’t get it. If you don’t know what questions to ask, you can’t get the answers.”

Robinson grew up to play third base for the Baltimore Orioles, and gained great notoriety for his fielding ability. Nicknamed “The Human Vacuum Cleaner”, he is considered to be the greatest defensive third-baseman of all time. Robinson won 16 consecutive Gold Glove Awards during his career, tied with pitcher Jim Kaat for the second most all-time for any player at any position. He was also a productive hitter who in his best season offensively (1964) hit 28 home runs and led the league with 118 runs batted in.

In the 1970s, Robinson published his autobiography entitled “Third Base is My Home.” The book is notorious for the story about how he met his future wife. She was a flight attendant on an Orioles team flight, and he was so smitten with her, he kept ordering iced teas from her until he eventually ended up helping her in the galley.

In 1999, Robinson ranked Number 80 on The Sporting News’ list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players, and was elected to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.

A longtime supporter of Scouting, Robinson served for many years on the executive board of the Baltimore Area Council, Boy Scouts of America and is a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. On December 5, 2006 he was recognized for his accomplishments on and off of the field when he received the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. On May 16, 2007, Radio Tower Drive, a road in Pikesville, Maryland was renamed “Brooks Robinson Drive” in honor of Robinson’s 70th birthday.

He was forced to retire after multiple knee injuries in 1973.

One of Butkus’s greatest known strengths was the ability to rip out the ball from ball carrier’s hands. Although back then the statistic was not kept, it has been noted that Butkus would certainly be one of the all-time leaders in the forced fumbles category.

Dick was also selected the 70th Greatest Athlete of the 20th Century by ESPN, the ninth-best player in NFL history by The Sporting News, and the fifth-best by the Associated Press. The National Football League named him to their All-Time team in 2000. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979. He was named as head coach of the XFL’s Chicago Enforcers franchise but was replaced with coach Ron Meyer for the league’s only season in 2001.

Dick is also highly regarded as a great humanitarian. In a tribute to his life off the field, Dick has been presented with the “Life Achievement Award” from Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and he is the recipient of the “Pope John Award,” which recognizes outstanding achievement towards humanity.

Troy Aikman may appear on 'Dancing With The Stars'

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, Troy Aikman, told TMZ that he is officially on board to do Dancing With The Stars next season, joining the likes of past athletes such as NFL greats Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith.

Aikman was leaving Red O Restaurant in Los Angeles when he broke the news to TMZ reporters.

Apparently there are confliting reports. Aikman in his own words Tweets:

“I will not be on DWTS…interferes with American Idol auditions. “

Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram points out, the next season of Dancing With The Stars would conflict with Aikman’s football duties, the show has two “seasons” per year.  So Aikman possibly could have appeared “next year” as in, literally, next year.

Last season DWTS showcased three top sports figures including ESPN reporter Erin Andrews, Olympic Gold medalist ice skating champion, Evan Lysacek and Cincinnati Bengal’s wide receiver, Chad Ochocinco.

It is no secret that NFL players and professional athletes do well on Dancing With The Stars.

Jerome Bettis is a sought after motivational speaker

When asked about Ben Roethlisberger, Bettis told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Wednesday that Roethlisberger “has to prove his heart is in the right place” in order to regain acceptance with the NFL and fans.

Roethlisberger is eligible to report for training camp, which starts at the end of this month, and to play in the preseason.

“I know from knowing Ben that his heart is in the right place,” Bettis said.

“He has to keep his head down, play hard and give back to the community,” Bettis told the paper. “If he does that, slowly but surely, he will be able to work through the process.

“It is not going to be a quick fix.”

Bettis is considered one of the greatest backs ever to play in the NFL, and is fifth on the National Football League’s all-time rushing list. He retired in 2006 after a Super Bowl victory.
