Billups was born in Denver, Colorado and enjoyed an illustrious high school career. He was Mr. Colorado Basketball three times, a two-time Colorado Player of the Year and an All-State first team player throughout his high school career. He continued his college career locally at the University of Colorado, where he became one of only five players to have his jersey retired.

In the 1997 draft, he was drafted third overall by the Boston Celtics, but was traded midway through his first season to the Toronto Raptors. Billups’ career didn’t take off until he signed as a free agent with the Detroit Pistons prior to the star of the 2002 season.

Chauncey Billups quickly earned respect from Pistons fans and colleagues for his tenacious defense and clutch shooting. Billups helped lead the Pistons to the 2004 NBA championship, averaging 21 points per game and 5.2 assists in the NBA Finals to earn the Finals MVP Award. In 2005, the Pistons lost a heart-breaking finals in seven games to the San Antonio Spurs, a series in which Billups would likely have been Finals MVP again had they prevailed.

In 2006, Billups was named co-captain of the team. Although he captained the Pistons to a franchise best 64–18 record, they failed to make it to the NBA Finals for the first time in three years. He also led the league in assist-to-turnover ratio.

Prior to the start of the 2008-09 NBA season, Billups was traded to his hometown Denver Nuggets, the team he followed growing up, for perennial All-Star Allen Iverson. The trade would prove to be arguably the best in Nuggets history because Billups would become the missing piece of the puzzle the Nuggets had always needed.

The Nuggets’ 54-28 record matched the most wins in franchise history since the team’s induction into the NBA. Billups helped lead the Nuggets to a Northwest Division Title and #2 seed in the Western Conference, where they quickly disposed of the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks to advance to the Western Conference Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Chauncey Billups has received numerous accolades, including being named to the NBA All-Star team for three consecutive years in 2006 – 09, and the NBA All-Defensive 2nd for two consecutive years in 2004-06.

Billups is married with three daughters.
