Retired basketball player, Darrell Griffith, "Dr. Dunkenstein" , was born on June 16, 1958 in Louisville, Kentucky. Darrell Griffith spent his entire NBA career with the Utah Jazz.
In Louisville's 1980 college season, Darrell Griffith was an All-American guard that helped direct the Cardinals to a 26-3 overall record, a perfect 12-0 in the Metro Conference and a No.2 ranking in the final poll. He Lead the University of Louisville to the NCAA Championship and was named 1980 College Player of the Year. Griffith was Louisville's career scoring leader. With a 22.5 point average per game, he scored in double figures in 34 straight games. Former Memphis State coach Dana Kirk said: "Nobody could fly like Darrell could. Griffith, the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1981, played for the Jazz for 11 seasons and ultimately had his number 35 retired by the team on December 4, 1993. He was nicknamed Dr. Dunkenstein for his aerial exploits and was often referred to as "The Golden Griff" by Jazz play-by-play announcer Hot Rod Hundley.
He was a first team All-American in college and led the University of Louisville Cardinals to the 1980 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship by scoring 23 points in the Cardinals' 59-54 win over UCLA. With over 2,300 career points, he remains Louisville's all-time career scoring leader.
