Dick Butkus is best remembered as one of the toughest and most intimidating linebackers in football history. Butkus was an All-American at the University of Illinois and the leader of the Chicago Bears defense for nearly a decade.

At the University of Illinois, Butkus had a steller career. He was a top contender for the Heisman Trophy in 1963 and 1964. His jersey is one of only two ever retired by the Illini. Each year, the nation’s top linebacker receives the Dick Butkus Award. He was named Big Ten Most Valuable Player and the American Football Coaches Association Player of the Year in 1964.

Butkus continued his football career in-state as he was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1965.

Butkus’s tackling ability combined with quickness and agility instantly made him a dominant linebacker in the NFL. Within his first few professional seasons, Butkus helped the previously struggling Bears make a complete turnaround. Throughout his nine years with the Bears, Butkus recorded a total of 1,020 tackles and 489 assists. He also recovered 17 fumbles and made 22 interceptions. He retired in 1973.

Butkus was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979 and his jersey was retired by the Bears in 1994.

After retirement, Butkus became a popular TV personality and successful actor. He was a regular character on shows such as “Hang Time” and “My Two Dads”. He also appeared in the films “Any Given Sunday” and “Necessary Roughness”. Most recently, Butkus appeared in the ESPN reality show “Bound For Glory”.
