Lou Brock is regarded as one of the finest base runners in the history of Major League Baseball. His speed and base running instinct allowed him to shatter stolen-base records and become one of the greatest St. Louis Cardinals of all-time. Brock was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1985.

Brock’s career spanned nineteen years, beginning with the Chicago Cubs (1961-1964) and then continuing primarily for the St. Louis Cardinals (1964-1979). He totaled 938 stolen bases in his career. In 1974 alone, he stole 118 bases, breaking the Major League single season record. Brock also held the National League’s record for stolen bases for eight seasons. Brock’s base-stealing success earned him the nickname “Running Redbird”.

Brock was also exceptional with a bat. He collected over 3,000 hits in his career, and became the first player to steal 50 bases and hit 20 home runs in one season. He helped lead the Cardinals to two World Series championships (1964, 1967) and three National League championships (1964, 1967, and 1968). In 1974, Brock was named the Major League Player of the Year. As a tribute to Lou Brock’s significant base running, the National League presents the Lou Brock Award to each year’s stolen base leader.

Today, Lou and his wife Jacqueline are ordained ministers and elders at Abundant Life Fellowship Church in St. Louis. The couple is sought after as ministers of the Gospel and keynote speakers delivering inspirational, motivational and spiritual messages.

The Brocks serve on the board of several universities and many local and national youth organizations, including Education Is Freedom Foundation, Variety Club for Children, Wyman Youth Camp, Old Newsboys Day Children’s Charities, ECHO Children’s Home and their own Lou Brock Scholarship Foundation. The Lou Brock Foundation provides annual scholarships totaling over $20,000 to needy graduating high school students in their pursuit of higher education.
