NEW YORK (WFAN) – Baseball Hall of Famer and MLB Network analyst, John Smoltz appeared with Mike Francesa on a WFAN radio show on June 23, 2016 and spoke about pitching. In the CBS New York article Smoltz had some advice for today’s pitchers:
“Back not too long ago, the information was you learned how to pitch, you learned how to get through it, you didn’t have restrictions on you. You developed in the minor leagues. That’s why the minor leagues was so crucial for a lot of pitchers who ended up having a long career. There wasn’t 90 pitches and you’re out. You worked in and out of trouble. You learned how to change gears. You learned how to develop.”
The article also mentioned that today’s pitchers “don’t know the difference between discomfort and injury” and that “he felt good less than half the time he pitched over his 20-year career”
John Smoltz is a Hall of Fame pitcher who played two decades for the Atlanta Braves. He is predominantly known as a starter and former Cy Young Award winner. In 2002 John Smoltz became only the second pitcher in history to have had both a 20-win season and a 50-save season, the other being Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley. John Smoltz is a born-again Christian who has made Atlanta his home, and is Chairman of the Board at Alpharetta-based King’s Ridge Christian School, and a member of the Presbyterian Church in America.
