John Elway’s No 7 Jersey to be Retired by Stanford University

Former Broncos quarterback, John Elway, is about to have his No. 7 jersey retired by Stanford University. The honor is scheduled to take place during halftime at Stanford University’s home game against Oregon on Nov. 7, 2013. Elway will become the third Stanford quarterback to have his jersey retired along with Ernie Nevers (No. 1) and Jim Plunket (No. 16).

Elway played for Stanford from 1979 to 1982. Although he never led his team to a bowl game, he had a 20–23 record during his stay. Elway led the nation with 24 touchdown passes in 1982, and he graduated with nearly every Stanford and Pacific-10 career record for passing and total offense. He won Pac-10 Player of the Year honors in 1980 and 1982, was a consensus All-American, and finished second in Heisman Trophy balloting as a senior. In 2000, Elway was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. In 2007, and was ranked #15 on ESPN’s Top 25 Players In College Football History list.

Elway is regarded as one of the top quarterbacks ever to play the game. He has one of the best winning percentages in league history (148–82–1), and is tied for second most Pro Bowl selections for a quarterback (nine). As of 2012, Elway and Tom Brady are the only quarterbacks to start in 5 Super Bowls. Elway went on to win two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos and is currently executive vice president of the Broncos franchise.
